Batalha

The town of Batalha grew alongside the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória (Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery), whose construction began in 1386 in fulfilment of a vow by D. João I, King of Portugal, who promised Our Lady that he would build it if Portugal defeated Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385.
