The central region of Portugal offers a wide range of tourist experiences.
The unique university city of Coimbra, the sanctuary of Fátima, the imposing monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, the mythical medieval town of Óbidos and the coastline marked by the world-famous Nazaré waves, are just a few examples of what this region has to offer its visitors.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, the imposing Mosteiro de Alcobaça (Alcobaça Monastery) is one of the most impressive and beautiful testimonies to Cistercian architecture in the whole of Europe. In spite of its almost 900 years of existence, all the medieval structures remain intact and its church is the largest in the primitive Gothic style built in Portugal in the Middle Ages. But Alcobaça is also the incredible convent dessert that delights millions of visitors, or the home of Portuguese "chita" (chintz). This is a traditional patterned cotton fabric originating in India that was first brought to Europe by the Portuguese in the 15th century and today this area continues to be the home of traditional fabric.
