The unique university city of Coimbra, the sanctuary of Fátima, the imposing monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, the mythical medieval town of Óbidos and the coastline marked by the world-famous Nazaré waves, are just a few examples of what this region has to offer its visitors.
Universally recognised as one of the major pilgrimage sites and a beacon of the Christian faith, Fátima receives millions of visitors annually. Its Sanctuary, built on the site of Cova da Iria, is a famous landmark. This was where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917 to the three little shepherd children of Fátima (Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta).
