Porto is a beautiful city in the north of Portugal, it is the second largest city and its history is strongly influenced by the Douro river.
Porto is on the right side of the Douro. On the left is Vila Nova de Gaia, one of the city´s biggest suburbs and area where most of the Port wine cellars are located. Porto is connected to Gaia by four bridges. Two of them only carry trains, and the other two carry motor vehicles. The Ponte D. Luis is a two-trays bridge built by Eiffel, the French engineer that also built the Eiffel tower in Paris – it is the “ex-libris” of the city.
There is a very characteristic part of the city called Ribeira. It is one of the oldest parts of Porto and used to be the place where trading and commerce took place. Today it is mainly a tourist site and a good part of Porto´s night life happens here.
Across the river from Ribeira are the cellars of the world-renowned Port Wine. In the old days the wine was carried up the river, on barrels, using the “Barcos Rabelos”. Although they are not used for business purposes anymore you can still see them around and even sail in one of them.
A short walk from Ribeira is Porto´s downtown; here you will find lots of shops and nice places to visit. The Downtown area is also quite old, therefore guests will find lots of coble-stoned, narrow streets and very picturesque buildings.
The right place to contemplate the beautiful sea is Foz. Foz is the upscale neighbourhood of Porto. During the day it is relatively quiet, you can walk alongside the beach and enjoy the views. In the summer it gets very lively because there are a considerable number of small restaurants and bars where people meet to enjoy the afternoon sun. During the night the bars get very busy.
Visitors arriving by air at the “Invicta” (an epithet of the City of Oporto) find a modern and functional airport, ready to welcome them in the best of manners. The Terminal has a wide and pleasant public hall for passengers and their parties. The airport lies outside the city but only 15/20 minutes by Bus from the city centre.
Portugal has an Atlantic climate with Mediterranean influence and there are no great variations in temperature. The season when rain is more expected is usually from middle November to end of February.
Apart from the meeting facilities presented in the next pages, Oporto offers a nice selection of Hotels that besides accommodation offer a interesting number of meeting rooms.
